Hamnpork’s rescue from the rat pit with an elastic cord

The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents

Hamnpork’s rescue from the rat pit with an elastic cord is a split-second extraction from a terrier’s reach, made possible by Sardines’s nerve and an unlikely piece of scavenged equipment. As Hamnpork faces Jacko below, Sardines descends and clings to him; the stretched elastic then snaps them upward, leaving the dog biting at empty air.

The Pit and Its Danger

The rescue takes place amid rat-coursing: men put live rats into a wooden ring with terriers, while the rats mostly run in panic rather than fight. Maurice explains to Darktan that a single rat may think and show courage, but a crowd overwhelmed by fear can behave like one mindless creature. The pit is therefore more than a drop to negotiate: it is a confined spectacle in which frightened rats and a dog are forced together.

Hamnpork is among the rats in the pit, and Darktan’s party has to find a way to reach him without exposing a rescuer to Jacko. When Darktan asks whether someone could be lowered on a string, Sardines volunteers at once. Nourishing objects that a plain string could cut into the rescuer during the descent, making the method as dangerous to Sardines as the dog below.

Sardines’s Improvised Equipment

Sardines has another coil concealed beneath his thick coil of string: light-brown rubber bands that snap back when pulled. He explains that he took them from a desk while searching for more string and has used them before. Their springiness makes them useful for a long drop, offering a way to lower a rescuer and then pull him back up rather than leave him stranded in the pit.

Darktan accepts the possibility and begins to formulate a plan. The scene keeps its practical details in view: the rats are gathered on a beam above the pit, and an old candle lantern lies on its side nearby, its glass smashed and its candle long eaten. Below, Jacko’s roar makes the cost of delay immediate. The rescue depends not on overpowering the terrier but on turning the distance between the beam and the pit into a controlled descent and a sudden escape.

Descent and Extraction

Sardines drops through the smoky air toward the frantic circle, with string uncoiling behind him. He falls directly above Hamnpork, slowing as he nears the pair, and stops between the dog and the rat. For a moment he hangs there; then, with characteristic politeness, he raises his hat and greets Hamnpork before wrapping all four legs around him.

The elastic bands, stretched to their limit, spring back. Jacko snaps at empty air as Sardines and Hamnpork shoot upward out of the pit, then bounce to a halt just beyond the terrier’s reach. The motion reverses the immediate danger: the dog has been waiting below for a meal, but the two rats are suddenly suspended above him instead.

Darktan follows by leaping from the other side of the beam toward Jacko. The evidence of the rescue ends with the dog looking up and the crowd staring in astonishment; the extraction itself has taken Hamnpork out of Jacko’s reach, while Darktan’s plunge begins the next confrontation rather than forming part of Sardines’s lift.

Consequences and Significance

The escape hinges on several distinct acts of cooperation: Sardines volunteers for the descent, Nourishing identifies the danger of ordinary string, and Darktan turns Sardines’s overlooked rubber bands into a plan. The equipment is improvised rather than purpose-built, but its elastic recoil changes the rescue from a one-way drop into a retrieval.

The episode also contrasts the helpless panic of the rats in the coursing ring with the deliberate choices made above it. Maurice has described how fear can turn a crowd into a single unthinking animal; Sardines’s measured descent and the rescuers’ coordinated use of the bands show a different possibility. In the middle of a spectacle designed to make rats run, careful thought and mutual aid carry Hamnpork back out of danger.
